In 2019, the Alabama legislature passed the Alabama Literacy Act. The Alabama Literacy Act was established to improve the reading proficiency of public school students in grades K-3 and ensure that those students are able to read at or above grade level by the end of the third grade. The law states that all third-grade students should demonstrate sufficient reading skills for promotion to fourth grade, beginning in the 2023-2024 school year. To help parents and guardians understand more about the Alabama Literacy Act (ALA) and how it impacts students in grades K-3 across the district, Autauga County Schools’ Curriculum and Instruction Department is hosting several informational sessions. Attendees can expect discussion on assessment standards, reading improvement plans, intervention strategies, and classroom instruction changes to ensure success for most students, as well as parent resources and learning how to create at-home literacy goals as partners in your child’s educational journey. The virtual session will be recorded for anyone who is unable to attend the informational sessions.

Amelia Cantwell, a Prattville High School senior, was named a semifinalist in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. Amelia is among approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide in the 68th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. This academically talented student will continue in the competition in hopes of competing for approximately 7,140 National Merit scholarships worth $28,000,000 to be awarded in the spring.

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) recently donated three new vehicles to the Autauga County Technology Center in a grand parade-style presentation. The Genesis GV80, Tucson, and Santa Fe were gifted from the company in support of ACTC's automotive program, and not even the rain that began to fall mid-delivery could dampen the excitement of students, administrators, and district leaders as the vehicles rolled onto campus with lights flashing and horns beeping.

Autauga County Schools is now sending student attendance notices through ParentSquare. When your child is marked absent, you will receive a text message or email, according to your preferences, notifying you of their absence. As a convenient feature, you can now submit a digital note directly from that correspondence. These new notes are only required when you desire to use a “parent note” for your child’s absence. Please be reminded that students are only allowed seven of these excuses for the school year. Prattville Elementary School was honored with a visit from Governor Kay Ivey as a part of a special assembly celebrating the district's summer learning accomplishments. Superhero Summer Camp participants, students in grades K-3 from across the county, listened attentively as Governor Ivey congratulated them, celebrating their summer reading successes.

Please be advised the community is experiencing increased cases of COVID, flu, RSV, and strep throat per Baptist Hospital and Partners in Pediatrics, a local pediatrician’s office. These infections are highly contagious and often come with various symptoms such as high fever, headache, sore throat, runny nose, persistent coughing and sneezing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and extreme fatigue.

Autauga County Schools is proud to announce that Marbury Middle School was named a 2022-2023 National Beta School of Merit. The National Beta School of Merit award is given to honor a club’s dedication and commitment to academic excellence. To achieve this prestigious honor, MMS included members from all eligible grade levels on campus. This year, only 3,583 Beta Clubs across the country received this award. In a congratulatory letter to the school, Bobby Hart, CEO, said “Thank you for your continued support of National Beta and commitment to developing future leaders!”

There's no way around it, the Alabama summer heat is intense, and when humidity is high, the combination can be downright brutal. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama donated $114,000 to expand the Hyundai Initiative for Robotics Excellence initiative, in partnership with Auburn University’s Southeastern Center of Robotics Education, into Autauga County Schools beginning during the 2023-2024 school year.
